Ok, so here we’re going to take a look at some of the best RV skirting ideas for winter.

RV skirting is a must have for RVers wanting to improve insulation, protect their plumbing, and stay comfortable when winter comes around.

I’ll look at some of the best RV skirting available on the market, and for the practically minded, there’s an excellent DIY option if you’re looking to do it on a budget.

Best RV Skirting Ideas for Winter

Insulated RV Skirting

Insulated RV skirting will give you cold weather protection by creating a thermal barrier underneath your RV. Unlike basic vinyl or foam board setups, insulated skirting will help maintain a consistent temperature inside your RV, helping to reduce heating costs in the winter and also preventing heat buildup during the summer.

This is a must for full time RVers or for those RV camping in extreme temperatures, as it will protect your water lines and tanks from freezing, with the added bonus of improving your energy use.

Custom made insulated RV skirting is seriously heavy duty, and will definitely hold up to long term use. These skirts will have zippered access panels making it easy to reach anything you need to, without having to remove sections to get at vital stuff when you need to.

This is a high performance, custom made option that will make RVing much easier in the winter months.

⭐️The Skirting Co

The Skirting Co’s camper skirting system is made of thick insulated fabric, and forms a nice tight barrier around the base of your RV.

This is a custom fit skirting, and is made to measure specifically for your camper.

The skirting is made to fit around slides, storage hatches, and anything else you need to get at.

The skirting is designed to give full base coverage, and the panels are secured together with velcro and strategically placed snaps for a tight and secure fit.

The entire skirting is made to be a couple feet wider than the gap under your RV, this is so you can anchor the skirting in place. Most folks use small sand bags, or the Skirting Co supply their own special water bags for the job.

Although the initial installation will take a bit of time, it’s relatively easy, and a very comprehensive installation kit is supplied. If you’re unsure of anything, the Skirting Co’s customer service is excellent.

If you live within a 300 mile radius of The Skirting Co’s base in Akron, Indiana, you can have your skirting installed by their installers. They also have a network of installers across the country.

Inflatable RV Skirting

Inflatable RV skirting is a relatively new approach to protecting your RV in cold weather conditions, doing away with the hassle of installation kits, drilling, or permanent modifications. These inflatable tubes are made from heavy duty, puncture resistant material that creates an airtight seal around the base of your RV.

This design traps a layer of air, giving you a natural insulation that prevents cold air from getting in and warm air getting out, making it super effective in freezing temperatures.

One of the obvious benefits of inflatable skirting is how easy it is to use. Installation takes just a few minutes and requires no tools, making it ideal for RVers who are frequently on the move.

Inflatable RV skirting is really compact when deflated, and will fit almost all RV types, including travel trailers, fifth wheels, and motorhomes.

This is definitely a no fuss, super convenient option.

⭐️Airskirts™

Airskirts is a patented inflatable RV skirting system made from military grade material.

The tubes will mold around any obstacles like wheels, sewer outlets, and levelers, forming a snug, insulating air barrier.

The Airskirts are supplied with a high speed pump which will inflate each tube in around 30-60 seconds (depending on the tube size). A complete set of Airskirts should take around 45 minutes to set up, but I think this is a little optimistic. Just over an hour is about average.

If you have a twin axle camper (travel trailer or motorhome) there is a cool triangular shaped insert which fits between the wheels.

There are nice little additions like the push on plastic edging trims you can put on any sharper edges of your undercarriage to safeguard against possible puncture.

Airskirts have seriously tested their product, and stand by a 5 year warranty on defects and wear.

The biggest plus of a set of Airskirts is how easy they are to deploy and pack away. You can have the lot deflated, packed up, and be on your way in under an hour.

Although not cheap, Airskirts are a premium product, and you will definitely get what you pay for.

DIY RV Skirting Ideas

The best DIY RV skirting option is to cut and tape a skirt using ¾” foam boards.

Once you have all the materials, you could probably complete the project in around half a day.

Take your time with the measuring and cutting process.

A top tip as suggested in this video, is to stick the foam board to the underside of your RV to reduce the nasty tape residue left over when you remove it.

Cut little hatches/doors with tape pull tabs to access anything you need to get to.

Use foil tape (HVAC) for a good seal and a nice finish.

Although more suited to full time RVers or long stays, this method is very effective.

Total cost to do the job: $200 (ish).

Best Foam Board for RV Skirting

There are many brands, but ¾” foil backed board is what you’re looking for, and is readily available at most hardware stores.

FAQ’s

Does skirting help with cooling in summer?

Yes, although the results are not as dramatic as in the winter. Skirting will stop hot air rising and heating up the floor of your RV.

Will it affect RV ventilation?

RV skirting will reduce airflow as it is designed to do. But wont cause any issues as long as you remember not cover any vents or outlets that are meant to open.

Whether you go for inflatable, vinyl, or DIY RV skirting, the right skirting will keep your rig protected year round.
