Visiting the Grand Canyon will require some planning, especially at certain times of the year. RV parks near the Grand Canyon can get busy, but with a little research you can make it an unforgettable trip.
Here is my list of places to stay in an RV near the Grand Canyon.
Contents
North Rim Campground
Reservations: +1 877 444 6777
As the name says, the North Rim Campground is located within walking distance of the North Rim of the Canyon.
There are length restrictions in place for RV’s at this campground. Please make sure you are within the limits as you won’t be admitted.
Trailer max size is – 30 ft.
RV max size is – 40 ft.
The campground is run by The National Park Service and is a seasonal campground open from June till October. The weather can vary dramatically due to the elevation (8,200 ft) but it’s pleasantly warm when the sun is out. Be sure to pack warm clothes though, as night time temperatures can drop to around freezing even in the summer months.
There are no hook ups at this campground but there is a dump station and free water fill.
The North Rim Campground is well equipped and has clean and well maintained shower and laundry facilities.
There is a general store on the campground which stocks all the basic provisions, and it’s also the only place you can access free Wi-Fi (It will only handle basic online tasks.)
The North Rim Campground is a great place to come with an RV, offering spacious sites among the pine trees. Make sure to pre book well in advance.
Demotte Campground
Reservations: +1 877 444 6777
Operated by the U.S. Forest Service, Demotte Campground is situated around 15 miles from the north rim of the Grand Canyon.
A very authentic feeling campground located in the middle of the Kaibab National Forest,
The campground is generally open from May till October, but this is dependent on weather conditions.
It’s a smaller campground and only really suited to smaller campers and trailers. Only half of the sites are pre-bookable, the rest are allocated on a first come first serve basis.
There are no hook-ups or dump stations, and no showers either, and although there are only pit toilets they are spotlessly clean. Although the campground doesn’t have much in the way of facilities there are plenty of fresh water points.
The campground itself is really quiet and the plots are nicely spaced and all have a picnic table and a firepit.
There is no store on site, but across the road from the campground you’ll find a gas station which does have most of the essentials.
The Demotte Campground is a basic but beautiful campground only 4 miles from the entrance to the North Rim Grand Canyon entrance.
Long Jim Loop (Dispersed Camping)
GPS: 35°58’52.2″N 112°07’37.4″W
Long John Loop is a dispersed camping spot located on the South Rim of The Grand Canyon, which can be found on the outskirts of the small town of Tusayan.
The area is a dispersed camping location, so obviously there are no services.
The nearest dump station can be found at Mather Campground about 10 minutes drive away (6 miles). You can also get your fresh water here.
The cell service is improving but it’s still not the best.
This is a beautiful location and as per the BLM advice please follow the leave no trace principles.
There are plenty of sites for every size of RV, with lots of tree cover and room to spread out.
The town of Tusayan is close by and although there isn’t a huge choice for groceries, you can get most of the basics.
The Long Jim Loop is an excellent free camping spot suitable for RV’s situated right on the South Rim of The Grand Canyon.
Always check with the local ranger office (+1 928 638 2443) for local updates before visiting.
Jacob Lake Campground
Reservations: +1 928 643 7770
About an hours drive north of the North Rim entrance is where you will find the Jacob Lake Campground.
Open seasonally from May till October, but be aware that opening times can be affected by the weather.
The campground is set among beautiful ponderosa pine trees, and the plots are very spacious with each having a picnic table and a fire pit.
There are no facilities on site except for the impeccably clean pit toilets. Potable water is also readily available.
Just across the road from the campground is the Jacobs Lake Inn which serves excellent food along with their locally famous pancakes and cookies.
There is also a fantastic native American food truck which does amazing fry bread.
Just down the road is the Kaibab Plateau Visitor Center providing information and answering any questions you might have about the local area.
A great place to stay not too far from the North Rim, check with the North Kaibab Ranger Office (+1 928 643 7395) for local updates.
Kaibab Camper Village
Reservations: +1 928 643 7804
The Kaibab Camper Village is located about a mile from Jacob Lake Campground down a forest service road off the main Grand Canyon highway.
The campground is situated in a beautiful wooded area with lots of wildlife around.
Catering mainly for RV’s, there are plenty of larger plots and full hook-ups are available.
The facilities are basic but they are very well maintained, you will find showers, toilets and a laundry room. There is also a dump station on site.
At the campground office you can buy ice, firewood and a few snacks. (Stop for a while and watch the hummingbirds on the feeders.)
As at the Jacob Lake Campground, the Jacob Lake Inn and Indian Fry Bread truck is only a short distance away for a good choice of excellent food.
Kaibab Camper Village is a secluded and quiet campground set up mainly for RV’s only 45 minutes drive from the North Rim.
Mather Campground
Reservations: +1 928 638 7888
The Mather Campground is close to the South Rim of the Grand Canyon not far from the main Grand Canyon Village.
The Mather Campground is a huge site with over 300 plots and set in a beautiful ponderosa pine forest.
As with the North Rim Campground size restrictions apply for RV’s.
Trailer max size is – 27 ft.
RV max size is – 30 ft.
The RV plots are mostly pull through and come with a picnic table and fire pit ring.
There are no hook-ups, but there are plenty of facilities. You’ll find showers, flush toilets, potable water and a dump station on site. There is also a laundry room near the site entrance. For the amount of traffic the campground receives the facilities are in good order.
You’ll find everything you need grocery wise in the nearby Canyon Village, as well as a post office and the only outdoor 24 hour ATM in the National Park.
There is a bus stop directly outside the campground entrance that will take you into the village.
The largest of all the Grand Canyon campgrounds, Mather Campground has access to all the activities on offer at the South Rim.
Trailer Village RV Park
Reservations: +1 877 404 4611
The well known Trailer Village RV Park is situated in a beautiful pine forest within walking distance (1 mile) of the South Rim of the Grand Canyon.
All the plots are paved and most will accommodate large RV’s comfortably.
There is full hook-up available but no Wi-Fi and cell service is patchy.
The facilities are basic but really well maintained. Shower and laundry can be found at Camper Services which is located just outside the entrance to the Mather Campground.
There is a free shuttle bus that stops outside the RV park and will take you into Canyon Village.
Trailer Village RV Park is a full hook-up camper site situated as close as you get to the South Rim of The Grand Canyon. Make sure to book as far in advance as possible.
Any of the RV parks in this list will put you within easy reach of the Grand Canyon and hopefully some views you will never forget.
